Actor Sanjay Dutt is set to walk out of jail on February 27 after the Maharashtra government remitted his sentence in the Mumbai serial blasts case. The actor has been given clean chit by Maharashtra government and is being released early due to his good conduct.
Sanjay Dutt, the 56-year-old actor was acquitted of terror charges under the TADA, but found guilty of possessing illegal arms, acquired ostensibly to protect his family during the communal conflagration that engulfed Mumbai after the demolition of the Babri Mosque on December 6, 1992. He was awarded a five-year sentence by the Supreme Court for illegal possession of weapons in a case linked to the 1993 serial blasts that killed 257 people in Mumbai.
And now the actor will be walking free from Yerwada jail in Pune a few days ahead of his actual release date on grounds of good behaviour. The Bollywood actor, whose five-year sentence for his involvement in the 1993 blasts was confirmed by the Supreme Court in March 2013, will be freed next month, said a source.
Of the five-year sentence, the actor had already served 18 months as an under trial and was required to undergo another 42 months, which is now on the verge of completing.
He has been out on parole and furlough a few times since May 2013. In January 2015, Yerawada prison had announced the extension of Dutt’s sentence by four days for reporting late from his furlough. Later, however, it was found that the lapse was on the part of the jail authorities which had led to a delay in the decision on the extension of his furlough.
